The Western Cape Transport Ministry says 59 people have been killed on the province's roads in the first nine days of December.
Transport Minister, Robin Carlisle, says this is far in excess of last year, and the worst fatalities for the province in three years.
He says this carnage came about despite the intensive and extensive measures in force on the province's roads over the festive season.
Carlisle says he also welcomes the far reaching measures to counter drunken driving recently announced by the National Prosecuting Authority.
The Western Cape has also introduced a measure to counter driver fatigue through enforced stop-overs for a minimum of four hour.
