Police Minister, Nathi Mthethwa says the police's watchdog body will probe the death of a baby from a stray bullet in Mooiplaas, south of Pretoria.
He says he has tasked the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to investigate the incident and to provide him with answers on what led to the tragedy.
Police were attempting to stop a crowd from assaulting two men accused of stealing, when an officer fired a warning shot.
The warning shot ricocheted and the bullet hit the 14-month-old child and its mother.
The mother was taken to hospital, along with two police members who were injured while rescuing the men.
