One of the robbers who was beaten up by students at the University of Limpopo's Mankweng campus has died.
Police have identified the man as 24-year-old Lekau Mamabolo.
He was one of eight robbers who stole a cellphone from a student on Thursday.
About 100 students chased them, caught five of them and beat them with sticks, stones and other weapons.
Three robbers escaped and were later arrested off campus.
The other five were taken to hospital under police guard.
