Almost two-thirds of pupils in South Africa do not pay school fees.
That's according to Statistics South Africa, which says of these, 96.5% attend no-fee schools.
StatsSA released its General Household Survey 2011 in Pretoria on Thursday.
Chief survey statistician, Niel Roux, says the percentage of pupils at no-fee schools had increased from 0.7% in 2002 to 56% in 2011.
Ninety percent of pupils in Limpopo and 72% in the Eastern Cape attend no-fee schools.
However, in Gauteng only 32% do so, while in the Western Cape, it is 28%.
