The University of the Western Cape has suspended a male student charged with the attempted murder of a woman at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
A video of the vicious knife attack outside a residence on Saturday morning did the rounds on social media, with the assailant also reportedly assaulted by CPUT students.
The woman was reportedly the suspect's wife.
In a statement, UWC spokesperson, Gasant Abader, said the decision was taken following a meeting of the Rector's Tribunal on Monday.
He said in the last seven months, UWC and CPUT came together with other stakeholders to commit to working together to address the safety and security of students.
Abader said as CPUT is their neighbour, students from both institutions have always interacted and related to each other politically, culturally, and socially for many years.
He said students held a march on Friday to protest against two SRC members who are accused of separate gender-based violence incidents off campus.
"On Friday, UWC students marched against GBV and submitted a Memorandum of Grievances to the Executive Management of the University. There are cases that the Office of the Proctor is busy investigating and these are being prioritised because UWC has a zero-tolerance approach to GBV," Abader said.
"It is important to conduct our expression of anger and activism within the prescripts of the law".
