A 30-year-old woman is expected to appear in the Malamulele Magistrates Court in Limpopo on Wednesday after she viciously assaulted her newborn baby girl in a shopping centre bathroom.

A spokesperson for the police, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says the woman, accompanied by her mother went to a local clinic for a consultation on Monday as she wanted to know why her stomach was "growing".

He says the woman claimed she was unaware of her pregnancy and while waiting at the clinic she told her mother that she needed to go the bathroom at a mall across the street.

Mojapelo says it is alleged that the mother gave birth in the toilets before she started assaulting her newborn child.

He says the infant's crying was heard by cleaning staff who rushed into the toilets, witnessing the gruesome events.

Police were notified and rushed to the scene where both baby and mother were taken to different hospitals.

Brigadier Mojapelo says the baby died at the hospital and a murder docket was open.

The mother was arrested and will be charged with murder.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has strongly condemned the gruesome incident and said nothing could justify what the suspect was alleged to have done.
