The National Union of Mineworkers of South Africa said it had instructed its attorneys to explore available legal avenues to fight South African Airways' decision to cancel 11 routes as part of its business rescue programme.
Both NUMSA and the SA Cabin Crew Association said they were not consulted before being informed about the decision announced on Thursday.
The unions warned that the cancellation of domestic flights to Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban will lead to workers being retrenched.
They also believe that the Business Rescue Programme has not acted with the required independence and competence.
"Of immense concern is that the Business Rescue Practitioners have failed to provide any rational basis for the cancellation of routes," said NUMSA spokesperson Pakamile Hlubi-Majola.
"The fact that the plan was confirmed as a plan which was previously devised by SAA management is deeply disturbing."
