The Deputy President of the United Democratic Movement, Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, was released after he was kidnapped in Khayelitsha, in the Western Cape on Tuesday
According to party spokesperson Yongama Zigebe, Kwankwa was getting a haircut before heading to Cape Town International Airport ahead of the inauguration on Wednesday of President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Zigebe admitted that the details were a bit sketchy, however, he said Kwankwa was allegedly forced into a car by unknown people who had demanded a ransom of R10 000.
"He told his alleged kidnappers that he does not have the money, but was told to call someone who would be able to assist. He called (president) Bantu Holomisa who then paid the ransom on behalf of the party."
Zigebe says after paying the ransom, Kwankwa was dumped in an open field, still in Khayelitsha, and managed to get to the nearest police station to report the incident.
He adds that Kwankwa's car was recovered on the N2 highway in the direction of Cape Town.
