Two Western Cape fishermen drown after being swept off rocks

Two men from Macassar in the Western Cape have drowned after they were swept off rocks and into the sea while fishing at Rooi Els between Gordon's Bay and Kleinmond.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says the incident happened on Saturday.

He says the sons of one of the missing men and a bystander on a weekend away with friends initiated a search, but only their fishing gear and personal items could be found on the rocks where they had been fishing.

NSRI Gordon's Bay launched a sea rescue craft and rescue swimmers, the Western Cape Government Health EMS rescue squad and ambulance services responded.

Lambinon says during the search, the men were located off-shore in the surf and recovered onto a sea rescue craft and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation efforts commenced.

He says after all efforts were exhausted the men were declared deceased.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
