Law enforcement agencies in Kwa Zulu Natal have arrested two suspects following a botched cash-in-transit heist in Escourt.
Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo says three security officers, traveling in an armored vehicle, were allegedly ambushed by eight men on the R103 outside the town on Wednesday, and allegedly opened fire on the guards and robbed them of their official firearms.
She says they then tried to blow up the cash van but couldn’t access the money.
Two injured security guards were taken to hospital.
Mbambo says on Thursday, the Hawks in Pietermaritzburg, the Bomb Squad, the K9-unit, and police followed up on information received and arrested two suspects in the Escourt area.
They will appear in the local Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The other suspects are still at large.
