Six suspects, including two police officials, have been arrested by the Hawks on charges of kidnapping and extortion in Johannesburg.
According to the Hawks the arrest, on Thursday, came after the investigative team received information that a person was kidnapped allegedly by persons who claimed to work for the Hawks.
The kidnappers told the victim that they were looking for a person involved in a money laundering case.
According to the Hawks, the suspects allegedly demanded R2m to release the victim.
After receiving information, the Hawks team was able to track down the suspects after the victim was able to positively identify them.
The National Head for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, applauded the members for "a sterling job."
"Members of the public should also note that law enforcement officials do not require any payment to do their jobs," he said.
The Constable, Sergeant and their four co-accused are expected to appear in court next week Tuesday.
