Two men arrested for attempting to steal fuel from pipeline

Supplied

Two suspects, who are in hospital under police guard, are expected to appear in the Phola Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on Monday for attempting to steal fuel from a Transnet pipeline.

The Hawks say the suspects, aged 28 and 39, were severely burnt when they were caught by security guards in Kendal on Thursday night.

Spokesperson, Dineo Sekgotodi says the Transnet control room detected a fuel pressure drop on the pipeline.

Authorities responded and found a fire in a maize field nearby.

Upon inspection, they realised that the flames were from the burning Transnet pipeline.

One suspect who attempted to run away was apprehended.

He had fresh burn marks all over his body.

A second suspect, who was also badly burnt, was arrested after he was found hiding under a bridge.

They face charges of malicious damage to property, tampering with essential infrastructure, and theft.
