Two people died when a vehicle "belonging to the Speaker" of the Buffalo City Metro, hit a pedestrian on the N2 between Qonce and East London on Friday.
Unathi Binqose of the Eastern Cape Transport Department said the driver of the vehicle was also killed after the car overturned.
"We can confirm an accident between Qonce (KWT) and East London. It was a vehicle that had hit a pedestrian and unfortunately, the pedestrian died on the scene.
He said the driver lost control, overturned and also died.
Meanwhile, Buffalo City Municipality spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, confirmed "this very sad and unfortunate incident."
He said the Speaker of Council, Humphrey Maxegwana, dropped everything and went to the scene.
"Sadly, two lives were lost. The Metro is undertaking its own investigations and we are also cooperating with police authorities. We are putting in place efforts like counseling to ensure that we manage this tragic situation," he said.
