Police in Mankweng in the Limpopo province have shot and killed a 33-year-old man following a hostage situation that left a woman dead and her daughter injured.
Police were called out to a hostage situation in gaMatsea village next to the University of Limpopo on Sunday where they tried to negotiate with the suspect for several hours.
Every time hostage negotiators tried to approach the house, shots were fired at them.
It is believed that a 50-year-old woman was shot dead while her 16-year-old wounded daughter managed to escape through a window.
According to police, the suspect was hiding in the bathroom and a decision was made to enter the house with the help of the Tactical Response Unit.
The suspect continued firing shots and was fatally wounded by police.
The weapon used in the attack belonged to the suspect's brother who is a member of the Johannesburg Metro Police department (JPMD).
Police in Mankweng have opened cases of murder, six counts of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The motive for the attack is not yet known.
The incident was also reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
The name of the victim has not yet been released.
