Two people were killed and scores more arrested during a series of service delivery protests in different parts of the country on Thursday.
Police commissioner, General Kehla Sitole, called for calm in Shoshanguve near Pretoria after two people were killed during violent protests in Extension 6 which also saw shops looted and a truck torched leading to damage estimated at R700 000.
Free Stae police meanwhile arrest 60 people were arrested after a post office building and Moqhaka municipality's vehicles were set alight during a service delivery protest in Kroonstad.
Police said the situation remained tense late on Thursday but said Public Order Police were on the scene to maintain law and order.
In the Western Cape there have been several road closures along the N2 highway near Cape Town as protests turned violent and police and law enforcement agencies flood volatile areas, arresting at least eight people.
The City of Cape Town reported that protests had erupted in Khayelitsha up to Somerset West near Sir Lowry's Village with reports of looting and stoning of vehicles.
