Two people, aged 72 and 37 are due to appear in court on Monday after a drug laboratory was raided in Mogale City by the Hawks this week.
Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Philani Nkwalase, said a joint task team executed a search warrant following an intensive investigation into the flow of drugs into the Western Cape.
He said the team found “mandrax paste, tablets and an oven to dry methaqualone, buckets of methaqualone, and drums of powder used in the manufacturing of the drugs worth an estimated R150 million.”
“The duo will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 May 2023 where they will be facing charges of dealing in drugs and contravening the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act 140 of 1992,” he said.
The operation was conducted by the Hawks, South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau alliance with Crime Intelligence and members of the Special Task Force Team on Thursday.
“The collaborative approach proves to us that it is the only way to make a meaningful fight against syndicate crimes”, said the head of the Hawks, General Godfrey Lebeya.
