Three people have died while five others sustained injuries in two separate crashes in the Eastern Cape.
Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said in the first accident, two vehicles – an Audi and a truck – collided head-on on the N2 road near Peddie towards Qonce, formerly King William's Town.
Binqose said a female passenger from the car was declared dead on the scene while the deceased’s husband and child, as well as the truck driver, sustained severe injuries.
He said the crash took place around 11 am on Saturday morning.
In a separate accident around 3 pm on the same day, two people lost their lives following another head-on collision that took place between three vehicles on the R346 road in Qonce towards Stutterheim.
He said a Nissan 1400 bakkie travelling from Stutterheim collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota hatchback.
Binqose said the driver of the Nissan and his passenger were declared dead on the scene, while the driver in the Etios was rushed to Frere Hospital with serious injuries.
The truck driver was not injured in the accident.
Binqose said it’s alleged that reckless and negligent driving as well as possible alcohol was the main contributing factor to these accidents.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
