National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Khehla Sitole has expressed his shock following the death of two police officers, after an alleged drunk driver smashed into them in Deneysville in the Free State on Friday evening.
The two officers, a warrant officer and a sergeant of the local police station, were on duty on the R594, inspecting a truck under the coronavirus regulations, when they were hit.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo says the driver of a bakkie, who was allegedly heavily intoxicated, hit both policemen, despite them wearing reflector jackets.
He says the driver is in police custody and will face charges of culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as contravention of the regulations of the Disaster Management Act, in that he failed to remain in his house during the lockdown curfew.
