Mpumalanga police arrested two Ethiopian nationals who were found in possession of counterfeit goods valued at over R10 million.
The two, aged 27 and 47, were arrested in White River, and were due to appear in court on Wednesday in the local magistrate’s court.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said the arrest was carried out by a multi-disciplinary team in an “intelligence driven disruptive operation” on Monday.
She said the team has received information about suspicious activities happening in the White River Industrial area and kept observation before acting on the information gathered.
“During the search, two Ethiopian nationals were found in possession of two Toyota Fortuner vehicles, loaded with different counterfeit products.
“The suspects couldn't provide a clear explanation of the items,” said Sekgotodi.
She said a large amount of money was found inside the two vehicles.
Sekgotodi said further information led the team to a storage facility where they found a panel van branded like an “ambulance” in which more money was found.
“More than R10 million in counterfeit goods, inclusive of different types of sneakers, illicit cigarettes, body cream, hair pieces, and other items were seized,” she said, adding that the vehicles and the counterfeit goods were seized.
