Gauteng police arrested nine suspects and fatally wounded another in a clampdown on a kidnapping gang that had targeted a businessman in Benoni.
Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said members of a multi-disciplinary team also seized three firearms and a vehicle during the ‘take down’ operation on Tuesday.
She said the team, that included the police’s anti-kidnapping unit, were acting on a tip-off when they pounced in Ivory Park.
“The syndicate was intercepted where one suspect attempted to evade arrest.
“He fired gun shots at the members, who retaliated and fatally wounded the suspect,” Van Wyk said.
She said the deceased was also recently released from prison.
“Further investigation revealed that the three seized firearms and the suspects' vehicle are positively linked to other criminal cases,” Van Wyk added.
