The National Sea Rescue Institute said two people were bitten by marine animals in separate incidents reported in the Western Cape on Saturday.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said a man was bitten by a seal at Big Bay in Blouberstrand during an open sea swim.
He said in an earlier incident at Blue Waters in False Bay, a 65-year-old man was bitten on the hand and leg while wading in chest-deep water.
Lambinon said the man, as well as bystanders, suspect that the animal may have been a small shark.
“The bite wounds are being investigated by authorities to determine the species,” he added.
Lifeguards bandaged the man’s wound and he was taken to a hospital for further care.
The NSRI has appealed to bathers to be cautious in and around coastal waters and to swim at beaches protected by lifeguards.
