Four armed suspects were fatally wounded in a shootout with law enforcement officers on the R59 in Alberton on Saturday.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said police were acting on a tip-off that the suspects were planning to commit a business robbery in Johannesburg.
He said a multi-disciplinary team acted on the information and began a search for the suspects.
"A silver grey Toyota Corolla, that matched the description circulated, was spotted driving on the R59 towards Johannesburg CBD.
As the law enforcement agencies were stopping the vehicle with four occupants, the suspects started shooting at the law enforcement officers. A shootout and high-speed chase ensued. The suspect's vehicle capsized in the middle of the road," Masondo said.
He said police recovered four unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.
"None of the law enforcement officers were injured."
Gauteng Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, commended the collaboration between various law enforcement agencies and private security companies.
