Twenty-nine pupils were stabbed on school grounds in the Western Cape in the first half of the year.
A report from Cape Town says most of these stabbings were at the hands of fellow pupils.
Education MEC Donald Grant's spokesperson, Bronagh Casey, says one of the stabbings, at Beauvallon Secondary School in Valhalla Park, had been fatal.
Gangsterism has been blamed for many of the incidents.
Casey says the department's Safe Schools programme is tackling the problem, with interventions including conflict management and substance abuse help.
