"Absolute mayhem". This is how paramedics described the accident scene on the N4 between Malelane and Komatipoort in Mpumalanga on Monday following a head-on collision between two coal trucks.
Emer-G-Med said in a statement on Facebook that as a result of the collision, one truck caught alight engulfing the driver, thought to be in his forties.
"Unfortunately he was burnt beyond recognition and declared dead on arrival of paramedics."
The driver of the second truck was treated for minor injuries only.
Emer-G-Med said in a secondary incident a light motor vehicle crashed into the two trucks, resulting in four adult occupants suffering moderate injuries.
The injured were taken to the hospital for further treatment.
