Suspended COPE leader Mosiuoa Lekota : Twitter
The Congress of the People has suspended its leader Mosiuoa Lekota for his alleged role in dividing the party.
Cope Deputy President Willie Madisha and National Spokesperson Dennis Bloem held a media briefing in Johannesburg on Monday to explain their decision.
Madisha said a letter had been written to Lekota informing him of the decision by Cope's National Committee.
The Committee accused Lekota of convening meetings to form parallel structures which compete against each other instead of building and uniting the party.
"Last week he was able to call a meeting of people who are not part of the leadership of the Provinces and elected a general secretary and deputy secretary," said Madisha.
He added that disciplinary processes according to the party's code of conduct and constitution would be followed.
"The executive committee must act speedily on the issue to ensure its resolved as a matter of urgency," said Madisha.
