The truck driver who caused a horror accident near Pongola in northern Kwazulu Natal that claimed 21 lives, mostly children, is in custody.
Kwazulu Natal Transport MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, said in a statement that the man handed himself over to SAPS on Saturday after he fled the scene.
The MEC is expected to attend the court proceedings on Monday when the driver makes his first court appearance.
He said his arrest “is important in helping the families deal with the devastation” of their loss.
Emergency services personnel reported on Friday that ten people, eight children, and two adults, died at the scene.
The others, all children aged between five and 12, died in hospital.
A video of the horror incident shows the driver overtaking another truck on a double-barrier line before colliding with the oncoming bakkie.
