Tributes pour in for Minister Collins Chabana

Tributes continued to pour in Sunday for the Minister of Public Service and Administration, Collins Chabane, who was killed in a horror accident near Polokwane this weekend.

Two of his bodyguards also died when Chabane's official vehicle smashed into a truck making a U-turn on the N-1.

The truck driver, who was not injured, was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and has been placed under arrest.

The Presidency says Chabane will be accorded a special official funeral.

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said on Sunday that Chabane was as a dedicated and serving member of the Cabinet.

He said President Jacob Zuma was "deeply shocked" by his untimely death and viewed it as a huge loss to the government and to the country.

Parliament's presiding officers also expressed shock and sorrow at the death of Minister Chabane.

"The dedication, humility and good humouredness he displayed in carrying out the various responsibilities assigned to him will be greatly missed," Parliament said in a statement.

UDM leader, Bantu Holomisa, said Chabane's contribution as an MP and minister would never be forgotten.

The African National Congress said Chabane's death would leave a void in the party and government.
"With his incisive mind, sharp wit and easy humour, comrade Collins' passing leaves a huge void in the ANC and government," said ANC spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa.
