Stellenbosch University to perform more penile transplants

The University of Stellenbosch says its faculty of medicine and health sciences will perform penile transplants on nine more patients.

On Friday the University announced that doctors had performed the world's first penile transplant in December.

The patient's penis had to be amputated due to complication caused by a botched circumcision.

Now, according to a statement on Stellenboch University's website, the patient, whose identity is being protected for ethical reasons, has made a full recovery and has regained all function in the newly transplanted organ.

The Head of Stellenbosch's Faculty of Medicine, Professor Jimmy Volmink, says South Africa remains at the forefront of medical progress.

He says the procedure is another excellent example of how medical research, technical know-how and patient-centred care can be combined in the quest to relieve human suffering.

Volmink says it also shows what can be achieved through effective partnerships between academic institutions and government health services.
