Transport Authorities have called for a ban on alcohol advertising to prevent motorists from drinking and driving.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation says alcohol contributes to 60% of all road accidents in South Africa every year.
The crashes cost the economy R180b of the R306b lost every year to road deaths.
The Corporation's CEO Collins Letsoalo says this festive season, almost 1-point-3-million vehicles were stopped and checked as part of major traffic operations throughout the country.
A total of 3 944 people were arrested for various offences
One-thousand 465 people lost their lives on South Africa's roads over the festive season.
