Transnet pensioners have won the right to launch an R80-billion class action against the parastatal as they try to claim back missing money.
Thursday's ruling in favour of the pensioners in the Northern Gauteng High Court signals the start of what could possibly be the largest court action in South Africa's legal history.
Last year, the Transnet Pension Action Group, which represents more than 60 000, approached the High Court in Pretoria.
It claimed thousands of the pensioners had been receiving just R1 a month from the parastatal and accused Transnet of stripping the Transnet Pension Fund and Transnet Second Defined Benefit Fund of its assets .
Judge Ephraim Makgoba has now given the group the green light to launch the class action.
