Police detectives have opened an inquest into the drowning of two young siblings on Monday evening at a reservoir dam in the Kwanobuhle area.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says it’s alleged that at approximately 18:30, community members heard screams from children in distress at the reservoir dam at the corner of 10th Avenue and 1st Avenue in Kwanobuhle.
She says on arrival, the community found a three-year-old boy, identified as Iviwe Zakumba.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the boy’s father arrived on the scene and rushed the child to Laetitia Bam Hospital where he sadly passed away on arrival.
Little Iviwe’s seven-year-old sister, Botwelethu Zakumba, was allegedly inside a hole next to the reservoir dam, where repairs were done a while back.
The hole was filled with water.
Captain Janse van Rensburg said police divers were called for assistance and they recovered the body of the girl.
The investigation is ongoing.
