A traffic official at the KwaDukuza Municipality in KZN was sentenced to an effective three years imprisonment following his conviction on one count of corruption amounting to R800.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Natasha Kara says 43-year-old Sandile Lloyd Nene told a woman that her car lights were too close to her tyres and that she would be liable for a fine.
She says Nene then removed the complainant's car license disc and withheld her driver's license and asked to be paid R800 to return it.
Kara says the complainant only had R200 on her and Nene was willing to wait for the rest of the money.
The complainant reported to matter to authorities and a trap was set up for Nene which resulted in his arrest.
