Six men are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court after they allegedly robbed a U-Save Shoprite in central Johannesburg on Wednesday using fake guns.
Police said a suspect forced a security guard inside the store at gunpoint before he was joined by his accomplices.
"They forced the cashiers to open the tills where they took an undisclosed amount of money, wallets and cellphones of the customers before they fled the scene," said police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele.
He said members on foot patrol spotted the fleeing suspects and called for back-up.
Mbele said that the suspects after they had jumped into a mini-bus.
Police recovered the stolen money as well as wallets and cellphones that were taken from the supermarket.
Captain Mbele said upon closer inspection, they discovered that the firearms used in the robbery were toy guns.
