"Tlakula must go" Electoral Court

UDM leader Bantu Holomisa has welcomed a recommendation by the Electoral Court which ordered that advocate Pansy Tlakula be removed as the chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission.

The UDM was one of several political parties which brought the action against Tlakula ahead of the election.

They wanted the Electoral Court to recommend to parliament that Tlakula be removed from her position because of her role in a scandal over a lease agreement for the IEC's new head office building.

Two reports by the Public Protector and the National Treasury found irregularities in the lease deal.

In a written judgment, Judge Lotter Wepener said: "This court recommends that a committee of the National Assembly adopts the facts, views and conclusions of the court and that it finds that the respondent has committed misconduct warranting her removal from office".
