The Brits Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to three young people accused of a 2016 family killing.
Cousins Tumelo Mokone (23), Kagiso Mokone (23), and 20-year-old Onthantile Sebati were granted bail of R10 000 each on Wednesday.
The National Prosecuting Authority said the charges against them include four counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, the possession of a firearm and ammunition, and theft.
The state alleges that Sebati conspired with her co-accused to kill her family members on 06 December 2016, while the family was at home in Mmakau in the North West Province.
Her 42-year-old father, a North West policeman, his 42-year-old wife, a 19-year-old pregnant sister, and six-year-old brother were all shot dead.
Sebati and her co-accused were arrested last December after she handed herself over to the police and confessed to being the mastermind behind the family killing.
NPA provincial spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said the state opposed the bail application, and during proceedings put it on record that R100 000 had been transferred from the Sebatis bank account to one of the Mokone’s, to share equally amongst each other.
She said the fingerprints of one of the Mokone were also found on Sebati’s father’s car which was allegedly used as a getaway vehicle.
However, Mahanjana said the Magistrate granted the three bail with strict conditions, while Sebati’s psychiatric assessment report was handed in at court, and found that she was fit to stand trial.
The matter was postponed to 30 March.
