A man who violated a protection order against his estranged wife has been sentenced to an effective nine years in prison.
Matome John Dikgale was sentenced in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court in Gauteng on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Phindi (NPA) Mjonondwane says Dikgale's estranged wife Nthabiseng obtained a restraining order against him in September of 2019.
She says Nthabiseng moved out of the marital home as a result of the abuse, but her estranged husband ignored this and called her several times, requesting to see her.
Mjonondwane says when she refused, he broke into her place of residence and assaulted and strangled her until she lost consciousness.
During the scuffle, she was able to alert security personnel on the Estate where she lived and they caught Dikgale red-handed strangling his estranged wife.
In October last year, Dikgale pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, and violation of a protection order.
The NPA commended the regional court prosecutor Albert Dwera and his investigating officer Captain Kekana for securing a successful prosecution.
