Thirty babies have died from diarrhoea in KwaZulu-Natal hospitals in the past two months.
The areas which were most affected were Inanda, Ntuzuma, uMlazi and Mayville.
Provincial health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo appealed to new mothers to breastfeed and not bottle feed their infants to avoid infection.
He said it was thought lack of hygiene in households where baby formula was prepared was the possible cause.
According to reports, 1 735 babies had suffered from diarrhea in the past two months.
