Third suspect in court for advocate's assassination

A third suspect in the assassination of the criminal defence lawyer, Pete Mihalik, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The 35-year-old Vuyile Maliti, who is from Cape Town, handed himself over to police on Wednesday.

Two men from Kwazulu Natal have already appeared in court.

The State Prosecutor made a request for the three accused to be kept in seperate prisons for their own safety. This request was based on information from the investigating officer.

The 26-year-old Sizwe Biyela and the 31-year-old Nkosinathi Khumalo was arrested shortly after Mihalik's murder.

He was shot in the head at point-blank range as he was dropping off his son at school.

His 8-year-old child sustained a gunshot wound to his jaw, while his teenage daughter, was in the back seat, was not injured.

There has been much speculation about the murder with one newspaper reporting that a R1 million hit on Mihalik was ordered from jail.

Three years ago Mihalik, the go-to-lawyer for underworld figures, lost his wife, who was suffering from depression to suicide.

The case has been postponed to November 15.
