The NSPCA's Special Investigations Unit was involved in another successful raid on a dog fighting operation at the weekend when 9 severely injured dogs were rescued and 10 people arrested in Gauteng.
Assisted by members of the police, the NSPCA converged on an area of secluded veld in Dobsonville, Soweto, where dog fighting was underway.
Several dog fighters fled the scene, abandoning their animals.
They were pursued and apprehended by police officers.
The NSPCA intervened immediately to separate the dogs that were still engaged in fighting and then to provide emergency care for dogs that had been severely injured in earlier fights.
A number of animals did not survive while others are receiving veterinary treatment and will remain under the control of the NSPCA for safekeeping.Criminal charges have been laid in terms of the Animals Protection Act against those arrested.
