The National Prosecuting Authority has welcomed the five life sentences imposed on taxi hitman, Mjabuliseni Luthuli in the Pretoria High Court.
NPA spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said the 36-year-old hitman from Nkandla in Kwazulu Natal, was also sentenced on Wednesday to two additional terms of imprisonment for the unlawful possession of a semi-automatic firearm, a fully automotive firearm, and ammunition.
She said the court ordered that the sentence should run concurrently with the five life sentences.
Luthuli was found guilty of killing five members of a taxi association in December 2019 when three men opened fire on a group of people at Olievenhoutbosch taxi rank.
“He confessed to the police that he was hired by the Alexandra Randburg Midrand Taxi Association (ARMSTA), to kill the deceased in return receive a payment of R150 000 upon completion of the job,” she said.
The Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Sibongile Mzinyathi welcomed the sentence and applauded the hard work of the investigating officer Sargent Phuti Moloto that lead to the conviction and sentence.
