Taxi driver in court over Burry Stander's death

The minibus-taxi driver linked to the death of Olympic mountain bike rider Burry Stander has made a first appearance in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court.

Njabulo Nyawose who is facing a charge of culpable homicide has been released on a warning pending further investigation into the case.

Stander was struck by a taxi Nyawose was driving on Thursday afternoon in Shelley Beach.

He'd been training and was a few hundred metres from his cycle shop, where his father was working.

The former under-23 World Champion died on the scene.

The National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Ramkissoon says no bail was set in the case as the incident is still being investigated

"The case was postponed to the 22nd of March 2013 for further investigation. The driver was released on a warning. He is being charged with culpable homicide alternatively reckless and negligent driving" Ramkissoon said.
