Police in Ermelo in Mpumalanga made a quick breakthrough in the murder investigation of Lieutenant Colonel Piet Pretorius, who was gunned down on Thursday.
Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane says Pretorius was driving an official vehicle when he was shot multiple times by an unknown assailant.
He says the vehicle was riddled with bullet holes.
The suspect allegedly fled the scene in a white Sedan.
Lt Col Ndubane says in less than 24 hours, police arrested five suspects believed to be linked to the murder.
He says the vehicle allegedly used in the commission of the crime was found torched in extension seven in Ermelo.
Pretorius was a Commander of the Vehicle Identification Unit in Ermelo.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanaz, has expressed his condolences to the Colonel's family, friends and colleagues.
