Six people are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in setting trucks alight on the N3 on Monday.

Spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele says soon after the matter was reported to the police, a search operation was launched which resulted in the arrest of six men in Alberton.

He says on Monday morning just after 5 am a truck was petrol-bombed on the N3 but the driver managed to escape unharmed.

The same group of suspects are reported to have attacked other trucks but only stole the keys leaving the vehicles in the middle of the road.

The men aged between 29 and 41 will be charged with malicious damage to property, attempted hijacking and interfering with essential infrastructure.

Meanwhile, in Mpumalanga, police have launched a manhunt for suspects who set alight a truck shot and wounded the driver and robbed the keys of two trucks in three separate incidents near Bethal on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi says the driver pulled over to the side of the road between Standerton and Morgenzon to rest when he heard a noise and saw suspects pouring petrol over his truck.
The driver was shot and wounded as he tried to flee his truck.

The suspects fled the scene in a white car.

Brigadier Hlathi says another 35-year-old truck driver was stopped by three suspects driving a Toyota Hilux on Monday.

He says they demanded his keys and left him stranded.

A similar incident happened on the N17 on Tuesday when the driver of a truck loaded with solar ash was stopped by suspects in a silver Volvo.

Brigadier Hlathi says they too demanded the keys of his truck before driving off leaving the driver stranded.

In the Eastern Cape, similar incidents took place on the busy N10 road in both March and April where protesters demanded keys to trucks, before blocking the road and fleeing the scene with the keys.
