The South African National Parks (SANParks) says more than 100 vultures and a hyena have died in the Kruger National Park due to suspected poisoning.
The gruesome discovery was made by rangers on Thursday near the fence in the Punda Maria Section.
According to authorities, the birds died after feeding on the carcass of a buffalo which appeared to have been laced with poison.
Twenty more birds were found alive and rushed to a rehabilitation centre for treatment.
SANParks spokesperson Ike Phaahle said the matter has been referred to the police for investigation.
"The scene has been cordoned off for further investigation and the carcasses have been burned to ensure that there are no further poisonings. Initial indications are that some of the carcasses were harvested for their body parts."
Endangered Wildlife Trust CEO Yolan Friedman said poisonings at this scale place the vultures at increasing risk of extinction.
