Two men who were involved in the violent riots in KwaZulu Natal last year have each been sentenced to five years in prison.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says Sihle Jali and Sifiso Ngcobo were nabbed for their violent conduct at the Engen Garage on Nandi Drive during the unrest in July last year.
She says they were sentenced in terms of Section 276 (i) of the Criminal Procedure Act, which means that they may be placed under correctional supervision, at the discretion of the Correctional Commissioner after having served a portion of their sentence.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the riots is ongoing and another 20 suspects have been arrested on Wednesday by a multi-disciplinary team spanning over six provinces.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo says all 20 will appear in the Durban Central Magistrates Court on Friday on charges ranging from conspiracy to commit public violence, incitement to commit public violence and arson
The riots, that was sparked by the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma, killed 342 people.
