Suspect ordered to appear in court for allegedly stealing a Pierneef painting

A subpoena has been issued to a 42-year-old suspect to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in the theft of a Pierneef painting worth millions of rands.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Lynda Steyn says the painting was stolen in March 2018 from the former Premier Ace Magashule's office.

She says the painting was then taken to an Auctioneer to determine it's value to be sold.

The value of the painting is estimated to be R8 million.

The suspect will face charges of fraud and theft in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act as well as making false statements in an affidavit.

The suspect will also be charged for the Contravention of Sec 32 (13) of the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999 which is the destroying, damaging, disfiguring or altering a heritage site.
