Suspect in custody following fire at Parliament

A fire broke out in Parliament on Sunday.

A 49-year-old man is in police custody following his swift arrest after a fire broke out in Parliament on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo says the man is expected to appear in court on Tuesday where he will be charged with housebreaking and theft and arson.

He will also be charged under the National Key Point Act.

Brigadier Mbambo says the suspect was caught with suspected stolen property after he allegedly gained entry to the parliamentary precinct in Cape Town.

She says he was spotted by members of the Protection and Security Services when they noticed that the fire.

The motive for the suspects actions is subject to investigation which is now being handled by the Hawks.

Meanwhile, the Presiding Officers of Parliament have moved to assure the citizens that all efforts will be made to limit any disruption of Parliament business.

The fire caused significant damage to the New Assembly Wing.

The Presiding Officers will meet with all stakeholders today to take stock of the incident and assess the damage.
