A 47-year-old man is behind bars after being arrested while withdrawing money from ATM’s using stolen Sassa cards.
Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said the arrest on Saturday followed an intelligence-driven operation by the Durban Central District Task Team.
“The team pounced on the suspect who was withdrawing cash from different Sassa cards at an ATM on Anton Lembede Street. The suspect was driving an exclusive Mercedes Benz which he recently bought,” Gwala said.
She said 70 Sassa cards were seized from the suspect as well as R7640-00 in cash recovered.
“His vehicle was also seized by police.”
Gwala said further investigations led the team to the suspect’s Umhlanga residence where a USB stick was found after it was thrown out of a window.
The suspect faces charges of theft and the possession of suspected stolen property.
“A thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure that all involved are brought to book,” said Acting KZN Commissioner, Major-General Thulani Gonya.
