JOHANNESBURG, October 9 (ANA) – The massive storm that swept through Johannesburg on Monday has resulted in over 100 people displaced and homes damaged in the West Rand, Mogale City.
“The freak storm has caused massive damage, with the roof of Cradlestone Mall coming off. At least 64 people in Tarlton requiring accommodation, 35 in Munsieville old location and 80 percent of Mayibuye township having lost roofs as well,” said Mogale City spokesman Nkosana Zali.
“This is but the minimum damage as reported by communities, the picture will change as the situation is assessed further. The damage costs can only be communicated after a full assessment, which would be done tomorrow [Tuesday].”
Heavy rains fell all over Johannesburg earlier with flash floods reported in several areas.
The South African Weather Service earlier warned residents to prepare for possible severe thunderstorms accompanied by hail.
“Residents must prepare themselves for thunderstorms which can be severe, we will issue warnings which they can find on social media,” forecaster Madimetsha Thema said at the time.
Thema said thunder storms usually occur ahead of a cold front and could lead to high winds.
”When storms come people can expect gasty winds.”
However, clear weather was expected for the rest of the week.
The weather authority tweeted earlier: “Warning:09/10/2017 15h00 to 09/10/2017 19h00 Severe TS observed over Krugersdorp moving toward Soweto, JHB and Ekurhuleni, expect large hail.”
Another tweet read: “WARNING for ROAD FLOODING in the Joburg, Sandton and surrounding areas due to heavy rainfall this afternoon 9/10 2017. Please take care.”
