A 46-year-old man is in custody after offering police officers a bribe, to release a suspect at a scene of an arrest.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo says members of Ekhurhuleni District Crime Intelligence acted on a tip-off regarding a suspicious vehicle with SAPS branding.
He says other roleplayers came to assist and a Mazda BT50 resembling a SAPS Provincial Head Office vehicle was intercepted while driving out of a plot in Midrand on the Modderfontein road.
The driver managed to flee the scene but he was pursued and apprehended.
Lieutenant Colonel Masondo says the vehicle was stolen in Bedfordview in December 2022 and was allegedly used to hijack trucks.
He says while police were busy at the crime scene, a man arrived and requested the members to release the suspect, offering them R5000-00.
He was arrested on the spot and will appear alongside the driver in court soon.
